March 13, 2021The Constitutional Court of Ecuador to decide if animals are things or if they have rights

Professor Kristen Stilt is working with the Nonhuman Rights Project on a joint amicus brief for which will explore what rights may be available to nonhuman animals in Ecuador.

Earlier this week the Animal Law & Policy Program was mentioned in major national Ecuadorian newspaper El Comercio –a must-read newspaper for judges—in relation to a case Animal Law & Policy Faculty Director Professor Stilt is working with the Nonhuman Rights Project on a joint amicus brief for which will explore what rights may be available to nonhuman animals in Ecuador, including under the country’s “Rights of Nature” constitutional provision.

In addition to this advocacy, Professor Stilt also has written an academic essay on the topic which will be published by Harvard Law Review online soon.
