February 16, 2024Harvard Law School Mourns Steve Wise

All of us at the Brooks McCormick Jr. Animal Law & Policy Program join our friends and colleagues in mourning the passing of Steve Wise. We are deeply indebted and grateful to Steve for his remarkable legacy on behalf of nonhuman animals, for his steadfast leadership in animal law, and for his warmth, wit, kindness, and encouragement. Steve fought for animals with might, determination, creativity, and boldness. He inspired our faculty, staff, fellows, and students—from those who took his inaugural Animal Rights Law course here at Harvard in 2000, to those who had the benefit of his regular visits to Professor Stilt’s Animal Law class, to those who worked with him to translate Rattling the Cage into Spanish, to those who collaborated with him on the Estrellita case in 2021, and so many more.

In the weeks and months to come we will celebrate and honor Steve and his legacy. Steve’s work and warmth will endure, and the legal paths he has forged will be travelled by generations to come.

Our thoughts are with Gail, Steve’s children, his friends, and his colleagues around the world.

May his memory be a blessing.
