Caroline Merrifield is a cultural anthropologist studying food, farming, and the environment in China. She received her PhD from Yale University in 2018, and her A.B. from Harvard College in Social Studies in 2010. She is currently working on her first book project, which investigates the politics of taste and trust in China’s growing alternative food movement. Her fieldwork has taken her to vegetable plots, kitchens, hotels, riverbanks, restaurants, truck stops, and compost heaps across the Jiangnan Region and greater Beijing. A crucial focus of her research is food transaction, including markets for animals and animal products. She will begin a teaching position in NYU’s Department of Environmental Studies in spring 2023.
